Edvard Munch

Edvard Munch (1863--1944) was a Norwegian Symbolist and proto-Expressionist painter and printmaker, whose Scream of 1893 -- a wide-eyed, hollow figure on a blood-red bridge against a swirling sky -- has become one of the most recognised images in Western art and one of the most-reused source paintings in popular culture, advertising and computer-art remakes.
