R-Type

R-Type is a horizontally scrolling shoot 'em up arcade game developed and released by Irem in 1987. The player pilots the R-9a "Arrowhead" starfighter against the Bydo Empire, an alien biomechanical menace strongly inspired by H.R. Giger's designs. Renowned for its set-piece bosses, atmospheric stages and the chargeable "Wave Cannon", the game was hugely influential and launched a long-running series with home conversions to virtually every major computer and console of its era (Wikipedia)
